Can do: Use common adjectives to describe people, places, and things. Use two adjectives together in the correct order.

GRAMMAR

What are adjectives:

Adjectives are words that tell us more about a person, place, animal, or thing.. Examples: A beautiful car. A big house.

You can use more than one adjectives with  a noun.

Some common adjectives

My dad’s car is big/ My mom’s car is small

My dad’s shirt is large/ My brother’s shirt is small

The elephant is huge; the ant is tiny

A tall woman is standing next to a short man

The wide highway runs along a narrow path

One half of this house is old; the other half is new.

An old man and a young girl sitting in the field

Chocolate tastes good/ Medicine tastes bad

Flowers are beautiful/ Bats are ugly

This program is interesting

Lisa just got a new present, she is happy/ Tom’s bike just broke, he is sad.

The girl is kind to dogs/ The boy is mean to dogs

A beautiful large garden

A cute little dog

Different words in English for same words in other languages

Tall / High

Tall = people, trees, buildings (things that stand up from the ground)

Tom is tall.
The tree is very tall.
That building is tall.

High = position or distance above the ground

The kite is high in the sky.
The shelf is too high for me.
The mountain is very high.

Compare:

The tree is tall.
The bird is high in the tree.


Short / Low

Short = not tall; length or height of a person/object

Amy is short.
The wall is short.
The pencil is short.

Low = near the ground

The table is low.
The clouds are low today.
The ball is flying low.

Compare:

The wall is short.
The shelf is low.

Big / Large 

Big and large usually mean almost the same thing.

We have a big dog.
We have a large dog.
They live in a big house.
They live in a large house.

Wide

Wide describes something from one side to the other.

The river is wide.
The road is wide.
The door is very wide.

Compare:

The river is wide. (side to side)
The river is long. (end to end)

Adjective orders

When you use two adjectives for one noun, you must follow the following order:

Opinion + Size + noun

Examples:

A beautiful big garden

A cut little dog 

There are also rules for more than two adjectives in future lessons.

TEXT

Emma is shopping with her mother on Saturday afternoon. They are looking for some new clothes.

The shopping mall is large and busy, but Emma is excited because she enjoys shopping.

First, they go into a clothing store. Emma sees a beautiful red dress near the entrance. It has a simple design, but she likes it very much. Next to the dress, she notices a lovely blue jacket. It looks warm and comfortable. She also finds a small black handbag that matches her clothes. Emma wants to buy all three items, but her mother reminds her to choose carefully.
