Definition: a light and small dish served before the main course to start a meal.

Examples:
She chooses a salad as her appetizer before her main food.
We order an appetizer to share while we talk.
The restaurant serves a warm appetizer at the start of the meal.
The appetizer is usually light, so we can still enjoy the main dish.
